Honda Prelude

The sports coupe reborn

Honda Prelude

Overview

The Prelude was Honda's sports coupe flagship, produced across five generations from 1978 to 2001. It served as a showcase for Honda's most advanced technology, introducing innovations like the first electric sunroof in a Japanese car, ABS braking, four-wheel steering, and VTEC in a mass-produced model. After a 25-year absence, the sixth-generation Prelude returns to Australia in mid-2026 as a hybrid sports coupe built on the Civic Type R platform with e:HEV hybrid power.

The Prelude first appeared in Australia in the late 1970s, though the first generation was relatively rare locally. It was the second and third generations in the 1980s that truly established the Prelude in the Australian market. The pop-up headlights of the second generation and the world-first four-wheel steering of the third generation made it a standout in the sports coupe segment. By the 1990s, the Prelude had developed a strong enthusiast following in Australia.
