Overview

The Honda City has had an interesting history in Australia. The original Motocompo-compatible City was a quirky hit in the 1980s, famous for its tall-roofed 'Tall Boy' design and the turbocharged Turbo II variant that became a cult classic. The nameplate disappeared from Australia for over two decades before returning in 2009 as a budget-friendly sedan slotting below the Jazz. While it never matched the Civic's sales volume locally, the City carved out a niche as an affordable, efficient urban runabout. The 5th-generation GM model offered surprising interior space for its compact footprint, and its 1.5-litre i-VTEC engine with CVT delivered excellent fuel economy. Honda discontinued the City in Australia in 2013 as the Jazz and Civic covered the small car segment. Today, the original AA City Turbo II is a sought-after collector's car, with clean examples commanding strong prices.

The original Honda City AA arrived in Australia in 1981 as one of the quirkiest cars Honda ever made. Designed by a young team led by Hiroo Watanabe, the 'Tall Boy' concept prioritised interior height over length, creating a surprisingly spacious cabin in a tiny footprint. The base model used a 1.2-litre engine producing just 45kW, but it was the turbocharged variants that captured imaginations. The City Turbo and Turbo II (also known as the Bulldog) packed 81kW into a car weighing just 685kg, making it a genuine pocket rocket. The Motocompo folding scooter, designed to fit in the City's boot, became an icon in its own right. Australian sales were modest - Honda was still establishing its dealer network - but the City helped position Honda as an innovative, forward-thinking brand.
