Honda CR-V

The CR-V arrived in Australia in 1997 as Honda's first SUV. At a time when SUVs were still rugged, body-on-frame trucks, the CR-V was a revelation: a car-based crossover with a fold-flat picnic table in the boot, double-wishbone suspension, and Honda's trademark build quality. It was an instant hit with Australian families who wanted SUV practicality without the bulk of a Prado or Pajero.

The CR-V has been Honda Australia's best-selling model for most of the last decade. In 2024, it recorded 5,547 sales, and 5,595 in 2025, making it Honda's volume leader both years. It competes in the fiercely contested mid-size SUV segment against the Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Hyundai Tucson. The sixth-generation model introduced in 2024 brought plug-in hybrid capability for the first time, with the e:PHEV RS claiming just 1.1L/100km combined fuel consumption.

Over six generations, the CR-V has grown from a compact crossover into a proper mid-size SUV. The first generation was barely larger than today's HR-V, while the current RZ model offers seven-seat capability and a 587-litre boot. The introduction of the 1.5-litre turbo in the fifth generation was a turning point for Australian buyers, offering strong performance with improved fuel economy. The sixth generation's hybrid and PHEV options position it well for Australia's evolving emissions landscape.

With over 25 years of continuous sales in Australia, the CR-V is one of Honda's most important models locally.
